Marriott leads global hotel chains in sustainability

Climate Counts, a nonprofit that scores the world’s largest companies on efforts to shrink their carbon footprint, has released its latest ranking of major hotel companies—and once Logo - Climate Countsagain this year, Marriott heads the pack. Six hoteliers–Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton, Starwood, Wyndham and Carlson—were included in the annually updated scorecard. The companies self-report their efforts in 22 areas, including support for climate legislation and a clear, complete articulation of their climate action strategies.

Based on a point scale of 0 to 100, Marriott finished highest with a score of 62, followed by Starwood with 38, Hyatt with 29, Wyndham with 27, Hilton with 23, and Carlson with 13. All the companies but Hilton bettered their scores over the previous year.

Concludes Climate Counts, “The world’s largest hotel chains may be seeking practical ways to address a range of broad environmental impacts in their operations, from toxic chemical use to indoor air quality to water. However, few appear to be aligning such actions as part of a larger and more comprehensive carbon management strategy. An average sector score of 19 out of a possible 100 suggests the sector has much work ahead.”
