One of America’s most-visited seaside tourist attractions finally boasts a sustainable seafood restaurant. The San Francisco Seafood Watch Alliance has signed on Fog Harbor Fish House on Fisherman’s Wharf—which means the 220,000 meals it serves to visitors yearly with be prepared with only “ocean-friendly” seafood, and that customers will be told why this is important for the future of the world’s marine environments. These sustainable choices include such popular local fare as wild-caught salmon, Dungeness crab and Pacific cod.
Aquarium of the Bay, California Academy of Sciences and the San Francisco Zoo launched the Alliance to help raise consumer, restaurateur and seafood industry awareness of the importance of acquiring seafood from sustainable sources. The organizations provide regional support for Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch. More than 25 Bay Area restaurants have joined the Alliance since it was formed in 2009.
Aquarium of the Bay, a nonprofit marine nature center and certified green business, is dedicated to inspiring conservation of San Francisco Bay and its watershed. It leads daily visitor programs on sustainable seafood and provides an online guide to sustainable seafood restaurants in the Bay Area.
