‘Tis the season to hit the beach, where the sun is warm and the drinks are cold. Cancun, Mexico, is such a place, and now at last you can stay green. The JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa has launched several new eco-programs, from stepped-up recycling to a new reverse osmosis water treatment plant that turns waste water into clean drinking water. The resort also converts its used cooking oil into bio-diesel, which burns cleaner than traditional fossil fuels and keeps the fry oil out of the waste stream.
A conservation program at the resort has saved thousands of endangered sea turtles. Specially trained hotel staff comb the beaches for turtle eggs and bring them to a protected environment for nurturing. Once matured, the turtles are released back into the wild—and guests can help release the turtles.
The resort also participates in the Earth Hour Initiative, during which all non-essential lights are turned off as a symbolic nod to reduced power consumption.
