Microturbines work like jet engines but produce electricity instead of thrust.

Hollywood A-listers, top business CEOs, a head of state and senior environmental campaigners came together in the Maldives last week to share ideas on how to make tourism a benefit rather than a threat to the planet’s environment. The event—the SLOWLIFE Symposium, organized by the eco-luxe resort company Six Senses—drew actors Daryl Hannah and Edward Norton, business leader and entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, the heads of two solar power companies and green thinkers Jonathon Porritt and Tim Smit to Soneva Fushi resort in Baa Atoll, Maldives.

World Travel Awards has picked Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort as “Australasia’s Leading Green Hotel” in 2011. In the selection process, 213,000 travel industry professionals in more than 160 countries worldwide vote for the most excellent travel providers. World Travel Awards was launched in 1993, and the voting process is monitored and independently audited.

It took three years, but Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage, Calif., has earned Green Seal certification at the Bronze level. The hotel is the only Green Seal-certified hotel in the popular desert destination of Coachella Valley, which includes nearby Palm Springs.
