At the only international hotel event to focus entirely on hotel design, development and architectural excellence, a family-owned eco-hotel in central Milan took this year’s “Sustainable Design” award. Starhotels E.c.ho Milano, a 143-room hotel that was completely renovated in 2011, took this honor at the annual European Hotel Design Awards.

Designed by Andrea Auletta, Starhotels E.c.ho Milano describes itself as “a pioneering stylish hotel which implements eco-friendly policies, from low-energy-consumption technology to eco-sustainable materials, furnishings and fabrics.” Its Orto Green Food & Beverage restaurant offers a seasonal, locally sourced menu and “features wall lights that recall sunrise, noon and sunset to reflect the hotel’s symbiosis with nature.”

Also in the running in the sustainable design category this year were Radisson Blu Hotel, East Midlands Airport, in England and the New Hotel in Athens, Greece.

Starhotels operates 22 properties in a dozen Italian cities, and hotels in Paris and New York.
