In the dog-eat-dog world of major hotel chains, genuine commitment to environmental sustainability is a win-win. So says Ed Fuller, president and managing director of international lodging for Marriott. Going green, he says, “often results in cost savings with a relatively short return on investment.” And he continues: “I also believe companies with a solid foundation of environmentally and socially responsible business practices have a competitive advantage. Those companies who have been able to show sustained commitment in this area have successfully avoided the ‘greenwashing’ label and have gained the loyalty of their customers. We have found that our key corporate accounts want to work with businesses that share their social and environmental vision and focus. An example for us is with the global financial institution ING, who chose Marriott over our competitors because of our social responsibility and environmental practices.”
